Funny Toyota Racing commercial

Back in December Source Sound company (Charles Deenen) hired me to work on this hilarious Toyota commercial. The crew near Charlotte, North Carolina really likes sound which made it more fun to work on. I got to rig 4 Onboard channels in Ryan Tuerick’s Corolla GR drift car and 2 channels inside JR Todd’s Toyota Funny Car. At the same time I stood on the side capture External perspective sounds.

Drift Car…

I was quite surprised at the performance power and cool this drift sounds. I very rarely work with a film crew so I had to conceal my mics so they’re not shown on video. Because I had to work around camera and grip guys, I had to time it correctly to sneak in to rig mics. First I got access to place mics for the exhausts, then another to the cabin area. Last, after some runs, I finally access to place a mic in the engine compartment. We had to find a yellow gaffer tape to cover up my black mic cable going from engine compartment to the cabin area.

Note…..buy yellow XLR cables and yellow gaffer tape!

Funny Car…

Well, there’s nothing funny about this car. It’s like THE LOUDEST race car and goes way faster than 300mph!! I asked and got to place two mics inside connected to a small Zoom F3 2 input field recorder for Onboard sounds. Surprisingly one of the inputs didn’t blow out but captured great sounds. With my trusty Sennheiser 418s MS stereo shotgun mic, I was able to capture the massive burnout sounds. It was raining some so 418s is what I prefer for bad weather and LOUD sessions. The other recorder I used for External capture was the new Zoom M4 recorder. It did quite well too.

Special thanks to Toyota, Charles Deenen from Source Sound company Saatchi, Director Kit Lynch Robinson, Driver Ryan Tuerick & his team, Driver JR Todd & his team, entire crew, and Zoom North America.
