Gran Turismo movie

Gran Turismo is now in theaters. I was among 10 other sound effects recordists to have recorded race car etc sounds for this movie. Torq, a division from Source Sound company (Charles Deenen) did the fantastic sound design work.

My role was to record ins and outs of race cars and track ambience. The difficult parts were to try to squeeze my way into the pit and get as close to the race cars for maximum isolation sounds and avoid noisy people plus PA speakers. That being said, many of my sounds were sprinkled throughout the racing pit areas.

My Schoeps MS stereo mic (Schoeps MK41 plus MK8) is like a laser pointer. The mid channel really isolates, allowing me to point at specific areas like the engine or exhaust areas for effective sound captures. It rained on and off on another day so I used the trusty Sennheiser MKH-418s ms stereo mic for questionable weather. Because of limited spaces, Zoom F3 recorder was used inside a rain proof fanny pack. The race track is huge and being on foot, these portable setups worked quite well. When it wasn’t raining, I zip tied Zoom H2n recorders on poles and used Zoom M2 recorder to gather addition sounds. These were done at specific areas like at the Lamborghini etc teams.

Special thanks to Source Sound (Charles Deenen), Kami Asgar, Beau Borders, Zoom North America, Matt Cavanaugh, and many more. Congratulations to the entire production crew. Team work makes the difference.

Now go, enjoy, and LISTEN to the beautiful race car sounds!!

Watson’s recordings were fantastic, and got used all throughout Gran Turismo movie. We were able to mine the unique perspectives he captured for gold nuggets that added a realism and intensity to the race pits that really helped those scenes come alive.
